OBITUARY: M. KAY DUPONT – WRITER, PERFORMER, BUSINESSWOMAN
M. Kay DuPont passed away on Friday, December 25. Kay died from complications due to acute liver failure. She was 61. Kay was born in Cedartown, Georgia.
Kay was one of the country’s leading authorities on communication skills: business writing, public speaking, nonverbal communications, and business protocol and professionalism. She wrote numerous business books, including Don’t Let Your Participles Dangle in Public! and Business Etiquette and Professionalism. She also produced and sold audio- and videotapes on various communication skills and served as writer/editor/writing coach for many organizations, speakers, ad agencies, and web designers.
Kay was a Certified Speaking Professional, a designation earned by only 8% of the world’s speakers and was one of the country’s first Certified Professional Development Trainers. She taught communications skills to tens of thousands in the US and overseas companies, including many Fortune 100 companies, and for numerous government agencies. She was also a popular keynote speaker at many corporate and association meetings. Kay’s exceptional talent and skills earned her numerous awards as a speaker, trainer, and author.
As a businessperson, Kay built and ran several speaking, training, and consulting companies, including
The Communication Connection and Your Writing Partner. She was a sharp and savvy marketer and regularly taught other speakers how to market themselves, their programs, and products. She loved to mentor people entering the speaking/training business and many have benefited from Kay’s wisdom and experience. Kay was a member of National Speakers Association, Georgia Writers Association, Southern Order of Story Tellers, and Association of Lincoln Presenters.
In the past 10 years, Kay has also been known to many as Mary Todd Lincoln. Following a lifelong fascination with Mary, Kay spent 3 years researching her life and wrote a historically-accurate, award-winning book, Loving Mr. Lincoln: The Personal Diaries of Mary Todd Lincoln. Kay then created and presented one-woman shows in which she portrayed Mary in full period costume at Presidential Libraries, schools, theaters, and other venues.
Kay was an animal lover and often said, if she were to have another career, it would involve caring for animals. Of course, she dearly loved her cats, all of which were adopted from shelters. Kay was a long-time volunteer for Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless. She supervised the turkey line in which a hundred volunteers pulled the meat from 1,000 cooked turkeys every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays. Everyone there knew her as The Turkey Lady.
Kay is survived by her husband, Jeff Disend of Atlanta; her uncle Carl Millican of Rome GA; her aunt Wanda Self of Atlanta; and several cousins and nieces. Kay is also very fortunate to have an incredible network of caring friends, colleagues, and associates who prayed for her during her brief illness and continue to do so.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Kay’s name to World Wildlife Fund (worldwildlife.org), Save the Children (savethechildren.org), or World Vision, which provides animals, trees, wells, and other self-sustaining services to relive hunger and poverty and improve lives (worldvision.org). A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, January 3 at Dressler Funeral Home, 3734 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30341. 770-451-4999.

| Georgia Trusio | Mar 12 2010 02:35 pm | | Dear Jeff,
I just found out today of Kay's passing and I wanted to say how sorry I am. She was a lovely person and always helpful to me as the "new kid on the block" at ASTD. Every time I called her for advice, she was gracious and helpful. May the good Lord help you through this difficult time and know that you are in our prayers.

I treasure this book and her friendship. She will surely be missed. | | | Vally Sharpe | Dec 30 2009 09:00 am | | Kay was a dear friend. I am so sorry to learn of her sudden passing. May God bless you and keep you. | | | Patricia E. Patterson | Dec 29 2009 04:47 pm | | Kay and I met because of our love of writing and reading books. She gave her Mary Todd Presentation for The Atlanta Writers Club in 2004 to celebrate its' 90th birthday. We renewed our friendship at Adrenaline Gym, where we both exercised and I taught a class of Cardio. Kay was always upfront and center and took her exercise in a serious manner. She was known by many of the members of the gym and the SilverSneakers (R) group. She will be missed, but her memory will stay with all of us who knew her. Her smile, laughter, and caring of others, her Loving Mr. Lincoln, and all her other work will keep her ever in our minds and hearts. | | | Steve Williams | Dec 29 2009 04:15 pm | | Mary and I are saddened to hear of Kay's passing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
