  • OBITUARY:
Joshua Henry Wisebram, 86, a native of Barnesville, recently residing in Atlanta, died December 27, 2009. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jeanne Wisebram; daughter Dr. Diane Wisebram and her husband Edward “Doc” Jewell; son Steve Wisebram and his wife Woodie Wisebram; grandchildren Witt Wisebram and Harden Wisebram, all of Atlanta; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Aronin. Henry graduated from Gordon Military College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His college education was interrupted by WWII. Henry spent over four years in the US Army and was dispatched to the China, Burma, India theatre, where he attained the rank of Major at the age of 20. He retired from the Reserves at the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war, Henry finished college and returned to Barnesville and the family business, Wisebram’s Department Store, which his father Elijah founded in 1919. Henry was active in his community, serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Rotary Club, commander of the American Legion, and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Gordon Military College. He served on the Industrial Development Authority, chaired the Board of Directors of the First National Bank and was instrumental in bringing public housing to the city of Barnesville. Henry was one of only three recipients of the Lifetime Achievement in Business Award given by the Chamber and like his father, was a Barnesville Citizen of the Year. He was a proud Eagle Scout and served as president of the Flint River Council. He was appointed by the Governor to the Judicial Nominating Commission, the Select Committee on Constitutional Revision, and served on the advisory board to the Georgia Office of Fair Employment Practices. Henry was dedicated to and loved his hometown, the people of his community, and his family. Sign online guestbook at www.edressler.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. A graveside service will be held TODAY Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 2 pm at Greenwood Cemetery with Rabbi Scott Saulson officiating. I was so sorry to hear of Henry's death. He was a much loved and respected man and will be missed by so many. I most often hear of the family when I see Diane professionally and send her my condolences. She is such a fine person and I regret I only learned of the funeral arrangements today as I would have been there to represent my family and me. With much affection, Jo Ann Bowdoin-Aynsley and Joseph W. Bowdoin

Mrs. Wisebram, Diane, Steve and family, I wanted you all to know I am thinking of you. My heart is saddened by the loss of a very kind and "gentle" man. Mr. Henry's smile always warmed my heart. Visiting him at the store was always a must when I came home. The loss is sad but the memories make me smile. Oh, how many boxes did I wrap in the back room of the store at Christmas?

Mrs. Wisebram, Diane and Steve It is with great sadness that I learned of Mr. Henry's passing. As you may or may not remember, I had the privelege of working at Wisebram's Department Store when I was a teenager. I learned many things from Mr. Henry and he had a very positive impact on my life, not the least of which was that he encouraged me to enter the Army through the ROTC Program at Gordon. 40+ years later I am still in uniform in the JROTC Program of the Atlanta Public Schools. For that and his perfect example of what a gentleman and a leader are supposed to be, I will be forever grateful. He was my friend. I, as well as the entire community of Barnesville, will miss him dearly.

I was so sorry to learn of Mr. Wisebram's death. He - and the Wisebram family - represent Barnesville at its best (and there is so much that is wonderful about Barnesville). He was always so nice to children who went into Wisebram's alone. He will be missed - even by those of us who completely lost touch.

Henry was my mom, Marilyn Lempert Stern's, cousin and although we 'Yankees' lived up in the Boston, MA, area I remember seeing him at some happy occasions through the years. I have fond memories of my only trip to GA for Uncle Eli Wisebram's (Henry's dad and my Grandma Becky's dear brother) 90th birthday celebration. As part of that trip I got to spend time with Henry's family. All such warm, wonderful people! How interesting after all these years to learn that Joshua was actually Cousin Henry's real first name. My condolences to my cousins Jeanne, Diane and Steve and their families from me, my husband Marc and my daughter Becky.

Dear Jeanne, Diane and Steve, I'm so sorry about Henry. I had enjoyed the several telephone conversations I had with him over the last month or two about business and banking. I had it on my calendar to call him today. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for your message, Diane, and I plan to attend the service on Tuesday and bring Frances if it works out. Love, Jennie
