  • OBITUARY:
Barry Lee Berman of Sandy Springs (GA) passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. He was 75 years old. Born in Baltimore (MD), on Oct. 9, 1942, Barry devoted his life to education and to his family. A graduate of Baltimore’s Polytechnic Institute in 1960 and Case Institute of Technology (which soon merged with Western Reserve University to form Case Western Reserve University) in 1964, Barry earned his Ph. D in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. After being a physics professor at colleges in Kentucky and New York—where his first daughter, Brenna, was born—Barry became fascinated by computers and computer software, eventually spending his yearlong sabbatical studying the fast-growing late 1970s trend. His passion for educational and personal computing, and eventually the internet—which continued throughout his entire life—soon prompted him to leave teaching for educational sales. He spent more than 30 years in the industry, working for Fourier Systems, Wicat Systems, SMARTHINKING, and Pearson until his retirement in 2016. Barry’s tenure at Wicat Systems brought him to Atlanta in 1982, where he met Dr. Betsy Gard at a Jewish singles’ event in two years later. The two were married in June 1986 and together they raised their children, Brenna, Sarah, and Danny. Barry was an avid sports fan and loved watching University of Wisconsin football, the Baltimore Colts and later the Baltimore Ravens. He also enjoyed installing home electronics, as well as traveling with his wife both abroad and throughout the United States, especially to the National Parks. Barry is survived by his wife, Dr. Betsy (née Schlesinger) Gard; sister, Judy (née Berman) Zimlin; daughters: Brenna (née Berman) Broadnax and Sarah (née Gard) Lazarus, son, Danny Berman, and four grandchildren. Sign online guest book at www.edressler.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the U.S National Parks (NPS.gov) or the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org). Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, and continuing at Arlington Memorial Park with Rabbis Analia Bortz and Mario Karpuj of Or Hadash and Rabbi Joshua Lesser of Bet Haverim officiating. Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta (770) 451-4999.

I'm shocked and incredibly saddened to learn of my long time colleague and friend's passing. Barry and I worked together at several educational technology companies over the years dating back to the early 80s. I will forever remember Barry's passion for and unwavering commitment to improving student achievement through the use of technology. I'll also remember him for his boundless energy, his positive attitude, his tenacity and his high standard of ethics. Barry can rest well knowing he made many thousands of people's lives better through his work. Barry may have been short in stature but he was a giant in our industry. I'll miss you old friend!

Barry and I knew each other through our work in educational sales. I am sorry to hear about his passing. I admired and respected him a great deal. He was such a good, genuine, gentleman.

As if struck by a thunderbolt, we were both so heartbroken to hear of Barry's death. While our time together through Lake Arrowhead has been brief, our respect for him could not be greater. He was solid in every good way and the world is a poorer place without him. May he rest in peace

Dear Betsy and Family, I had the good fortune of meeting Barry for the first time last week at the North Atlanta Men’s Club Movie Night. We had corresponded by email as Barry was about to become a new member of the club. As Editor of the club newsletter, Barry had forwarded his bio to me. Seeing his background in technology education, I asked him to join our technology committee, which I chair. Barry agreed to volunteer as soon as I asked him. He even juggled his schedule to plan to attend a meeting of our committee this Friday. Leaving the movie theater last week, I saw a current member talking with someone I had not yet met in person and addressing this individual as Barry. I joined their conversation and asked if this person was Barry Berman and he greeted me warmly and said how enthusiastic he was about getting involved in our club. When I arrived at the restaurant where the Movie Night group meets after viewing the movie, Barry and I wound up sitting across from each other. He told me about growing up in Baltimore and his family along with his interest areas for our club’s activities. As we spoke, I thought he was a really nice guy and was going to be someone that will be a great addition to the club. With his friendly personality, myself other club members at the dinner were speaking in a way that showed how much they looked forward to getting to know Barry better. I began to think we could become good friends and was excited about his being part of our technology committee. Upon learning of his passing over the weekend, I felt a desire to come to his funeral service to pay my respects to him and his family as well as mourn the lost opportunity for future friendship. I’m so glad I came to the service to get to know Barry better. The eulogies of the rabbis and Barry’s family only reinforced the warmth, humor and enthusiasm I sensed in the brief time that I was lucky enough to have spent with him. You are in our thoughts and prayers. The memory of him, even for someone like me who only just met him, is a blessing. Marv and Randi Mazer

What a great guy! That’s what comes to mind when I think of Barry. We worked together in educational technology for over 25 years. Barry was a colleague, mentor and friend who helped me in so many ways. At his heart, Barry was a teacher. He helped educational leaders understand how they could use technology to help students be more successful. That’s what made him a great salesman. The desire to help others to be better. I will miss his advice, insights and even his jokes. I know I’m a better person because of Barry Berman.

Betsy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Mike and Judy GordonOct 18 2017 10:10 am
We were shocked by Barry's sudden demise. It is impossible for us to imagine what this must be like for your family. Barry was an exceptional man, and Judy and I were fortunate to have had him in our lives, even though we didn't have frequent interactions. We recall running into him at Dulles Airport several years ago. We enjoyed a fortuitous few minutes together at that time. We are praying for you that you will find comfort in the times ahead. As you know, I lost Gena 25 years ago. The thing that made it most comforting was knowing that I had made her happy. I know that you can say the same for yourselves about Barry.
    Robert ManningOct 18 2017 09:57 am
Barry was a bright spot in our group and will be missed. Our sincere condolences for your loss. In sympathy Robert Manning

In our senior year at Case, Barry, Lloyd Gordon, Gerry Wagner, Steve Rosenthal and myself shared ajoining apartments in Cleveland. They were strangely split with Barry and Lloyd in one, and the other three of us in the other. There was one kitchen, but I don't recall in which unit it lived. Now it's down to two, just Lloyd and I. Barry was very lively and fun. Later, he came to California and had dinner with my wife and I. I think he brought Brenna. When Irwin first notified me, I found a tear. I don't know how you're holding up Dr. B, but I wish you well. It's tough, I'm sure.
    Barbara CalhoonOct 17 2017 07:35 pm
I am so so sorry for your loss. It was my privilege to know you as a couple and spend very enjoyable times with you. Peace, in time.

I worked with Barry during his Logal Software years when he was the sales rep I supported, and then my boss. Always cheerful, always something encouraging to say. I remember his love of Baltimore crabs, UW Madison, and especially of his wife and kids. I looked at his page the other day, and he was happily playing with his wife and grandkids with a BIG smile on his face. He was always "all in". Ever smiling family man, that is how I will always remember him. It was a privilege to know him.

Betsy, Sarah, Danny, and Family, I am overwhelmingly sorrowed by the loss of Barry. And surprised! He seemed so young and vibrant whenever I was with him and you and/or your family that I was truly stunned and deeply saddened by this news. I will be unable to be with you tomorrow, but you will by in my thoughts and prayers: as belabored as that phrase has become, I mean it, and I am here for you if and when you need me. Barry was gifted in his ability to share love and joyfulness. It is an understatement to say he will be greatly missed. My daughter, Vic, sends special love to Sarah as well. With Love, Peggy
    Ben EntrekinOct 17 2017 01:58 pm

polly and will hartOct 17 2017 01:55 pm
Barry's life and how he lived it shines as a life well lived -- a person who enriched the lives of others. Kind, caring, generous with his time and talents -- he was easy to know and to admire. May his life instruct his children, grand-children and others how to live one's values -- as Barry did, in a world sorely in need of the example he set.

Dear Betsy and Family, My heart goes out to you at this difficult time. You and Barry will be in my prayers. May God give you strength and patience in the days and weeks to come. Deepest condolences, Dinah.

We are PROFOUNDLY sad at the loss of Barry and want to express our sincere condolences to his wife and children. We only became friends with Barry and Betsy in the last year or two (not nearly long enough). But our friendship was always easy and natural. I admired Barry for his upbeat spirit, a successful career, a strong marriage, and his extensive travel. In short, there was a lot to love and admire about Barry. In the end, I choose to remember Barry as a shining example of a life well lived!

In our freshman year at Case, both Barry and I found ourselves in uncomfortable situations with our assigned dorm roommates. So we were re-assigned to each other, a very fortunate outcome. We also shared an apt. our senior year. Barry and I had many adventures together over the four years at Case. I did not see Barry again for another 51 years, until we reconnected again, with our wives, at my home in Calif., in Dec., 2015, and then again this year, in June, in Palo Alto. I am so grateful for both of those times. Barry was a wonderful, positive, outgoing force, and found an amazing match in Betsy. Both my wife, Kay, and I are deeply saddened and will miss you greatly.

It is with deep regret that we learn about Barry's passing. As a classmate and SAM Fraternity brother of Barry, I enjoyed him very much while at Case (class of 1964). I will particularly remember our interaction at our 50th Case reunion. Barry was always a positive thinking person and fun to be with. I particularly enjoyed our interaction in 2014 with him and his wife. He will be missed!
