Dear Zoe, Ari, Lev, Nurit, Yaniv and Karen – Words cannot describe the sorrow I am feeling. I first met Ronen when I was 4 ½ years old when we moved to Atlanta. Ronen was my first friend here and I have many fond memories from growing up together. Some of those memories include learning to ride a bike, sitting in a giant red ant hill, carpooling to Hebrew Academy, playing outside all day and into the evening hours in Lake Colony, creek walking, swimming in the Lake Colony pool, playing in the basement while dodging the toy cars Yaniv would throw at us, Passover Seders, and many many more. Ronen was a good and caring person and I know just how much he loved all of you. I will always remember Ronen and my heart aches for you and with you.

From Hebrew Academy days to reconnecting through our mutual friend, Arin, I only see a smiling face when I think of Ronen. He was such a kind and gentle soul. Zoe, words can't express how sorry I am for you and your boys. I can only offer that you have the strength of our entire community to help you through it. To all of the Shachams, I want to wish you a long life and know that a piece of Ronen will live on in the hearts of all those he touched.

May you rest peacefully. You deserve it. Nelson Quinones, Jr.

Ronen was part of a group of teenage boys who were the backdrop to my high school years - always at our house - or Waffle House - laughing, joking and enjoying hanging with each other. Ronen was my brother's friend for many years, but in high school, mine too. I had been happy to hear over the years about his career successes and beautiful wife and family. My deepest prayers and condolences are with all of the Shacham family.

Nurit, Zoe, Yaniv, and Karen, I am heartbroken to have heard the horrible news of Ronen's passing. Like others I was lucky enough to have spent several of my formative years when we went to the Hebrew Academy. During these wonderful years we spent so much time together both in school and outside of school. Ronen was a wonderful person kind yet witty and always inclusive. We lost touch over the years but I will never forget what a special person he was. We were all better for having Ronen in our lives and I am devastated for you to have lost him at such a young age. My mother passed away at age 44 so I know that there are no words to console your grief but just to say how much we all loved him and what a special person he was. יהי זכרון ברוך. - Josh Hartman

So heartbreaking to hear this news. I haven't spent time with Ronen in several decades, but I still think about him often... and all the sleepovers we had in elementary school. I even remember introducing him to grits for the first time, for good or for bad. My thoughts are with you all during this terribly sad loss.
    Alan FineJun 11 2017 06:54 pm
My deepest condolences to Ronen's family. Ronen was one of the nicest and kindest person I knew. He will forever be remembered as the happy caring man he was. Words can't describe the sorrow felt by all his friends and colleagues. He will be missed but shall always remain in our thoughts and hearts.
    Monique DavidsonJun 11 2017 05:52 pm
I recconected with Ronen after decades and I have been enjoying getting to know him as an adult, a husband, a father, and friend. My heart aches for your loss Zoe. We are here for you and the boys for whatever you may need. Your friends will keep his memory alive with and tell the boys all the wonderful stories of who their dad was. The world is a little more dim without his light in it.

Shachams – Zoe, Nurit, Yaniv, Karen and all – you are in our prayers at such a difficult time. I don’t know if this is the right time or place but I hope my words find the right destination…My eyes well up in tears when I remember how much Ronen meant to me and how I can never let him know. Although as the years went by, we had lost regular contact, I recall so many smiles and laughs but more importantly deep friendship that was steadfast from 7th grade through high school laying the foundation of an enduring love (afterwards I have unfortunately rarely made it back to Atlanta). I love him for so many reasons and memories. In retrospect and without exaggeration, Ronen played pivotal role in my life that I am forever grateful for and sad that I didn’t recognize until now. His generous friendship and pleasant way from the beginning of our adolescence in 7th grade opened up a new world of friends to me. I joined Hebrew Academy for 7th grade as the only transfer from my previous much smaller school – so I was in every way the new kid. Because our families were friends from before we were born, with my parents and his sharing a common Israeli bond, our lives overlapped (i.e. many Pesach seders together) but our circle of friends never mixed until I joined him at Hebrew Academy. For that pivotal (bar mitzvah) year, his welcoming me into his established group of friends was critical and set up the rest of my high school years with the base group of friends that make up almost all of my memories. From then on, most of my teenage free time was either with him or somehow connected to that base established in seventh grade. He could have been so different – too cool or too uninterested to bother to bring in the new kid– but his huge smile and personality made bringing me into the fold so smooth. His heart was just soo very big. Without exaggeration, I would not be who I am and where I am in life were not for his friendship, kindness and heart. I am sorry to have lost touch and thank God for his having been my friend then and through the years. He made life more full and enjoyable. His memory will always be a blessing in my home – I owe him so much. Sending love and prayers that you find comfort in the love expressed by so many and knowing he had a great impact in the lives of people and friends in ways not he even realized. Our community has lost a great soul. יהי זכרו ברוך
