Louis Pichulik died suddenly at home on April 16, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jo Pichulik; daughters, Elissa (Greg) and Suzanne (Seth); son, David; sister, Jeannette (Michael); and four grandchildren: Sam, Henry, Sela and Solomon. Louis was born on November 16th, 1945 to Holocaust Survivors, Sara and Rubin Pichulik, in Anapa Russia, a port city on the Black Sea. Shortly thereafter, he moved to several displaced person’s camp in Germany. In 1951, he, his parents and sister, Jeannette, immigrated to Atlanta through the port of New Orleans. He grew up in Morningside, surrounded by a strong Jewish community that was his family. During this time, his parents owned a grocery store in the Kirkwood area. He spent many long days helping his parents at their store. After graduating from Grady High School, he went to Tulane University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in Art History in 1968. This time was an influential time for Louis. He fell in love with architecture, food and culture. He proceeded to foster these loves in his long Atlanta real estate career. Upon moving back to Atlanta, he earned his real estate license and began brokering land deals. After a real estate crash in the ‘70s, he began investing in apartment complexes. Eventually he transitioned into commercial real estate, which was his true passion. He rehabilitated historic spaces that reminded him of his Tulane days. He loved creating restaurants in these spaces. Louis was a creative visionary that found great joy in every tenant’s success. In 1971, he met a hard-working nurse from small town Dewy Rose, GA named Mary Jo David. Although from different worlds, they fell in love and married in July 1976. Louis loved his “Jo-Jo” with complete adoration. He had his first child, Elissa, in 1978. Suzanne followed in 1982. After losing baby Margo in 1988, David was born in 1990. Louis could not believe he had a boy! He was a devoted father and endlessly proud of his children and grandchildren. A doting husband, successful businessman, loving father and loyal friend, he will forever be in our hearts. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Arlington Memorial Park, with Rabbi Laurence Rosenthal officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The William Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum,; or Ahavath Achim Synagogue, Sign online guestbook at Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, 770-451-4999.

My sincere condolences to the Pichulik family. I'm sorry that I never knew about Mr. Pichulik until reading of his passing, but from the tributes it's clear he was a true gentleman. May you rest in peace, Mr. Pichulik, and thank you for helping shape downtown Decatur into the jewel that it is, literally providing space to so many of our beloved local businesses around the Square.

After 54 years in real estate no one has ever impressed me more with his honesty, integrity and sweet and kind ways. Louis was a wonderful person, who at one time, when I called him about a shop across the street from one of his buildings, which wanted an outrageous rent, said tell them to let their tenants make some money. And that might sum up Louis. He wanted to make money but he wanted his tenants to make money and he would help them anyway he could. Louis will be missed by the hundreds of lives he touched.

Almost 19 years ago at the age of 28 a simple boy met a man named Louis, who took a chance on him and changed his life. Louis never left my side and I stood by his. He taught me many things vision, friendship, importance of family, and much more. I love you Louis and thank you my friend, I will never forget you.

As everyone knows, there are stars in the heavens whose light does not reach Earth until long after they are extinguished; and there are people who continue to light up this world long after they have passed from it. Louis Pichulik was such a person. May his memory be a blessing to all of us who were honored and privileged to know and love him. Scott and Shelley Kaplan

Dear Pichulik Family - I was saddened and surprised to see Louis' obituary in this morning's Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I wanted to share with you very fond and pleasant memories of Louis when he purchased our home in 1978 on Greystone Road. Although that has been almost 40 years ago, I have never forgotten what a gentleman he was and a man of his word. You are most fortunate to have had him as a husband, father, sibling, and grandfather. I did see Louis more recently at a restaurant. We spoke and that brought back those memories. He made an indelible impression on me, and I'm sure on others he met along life's journey. My prayers go to God to comfort you at this difficult time.

Louis Pichulik was one of the best of the best from among my Grady HS friends. Always smiling and more importantly, always willing to listen. I regret that I lost touch with Louis and so many others from that era of my life. Louis was a sincere friend.

Dear Sweet Jo and Family....This makes me so very sad. Louis was one of the sweetest, kindest men I have ever met. He always had a smile on his face and nothing seemed to ruffle him. It was contagious because he was so calming to be around. And he had a great sense of humor with an adorable laugh. I don't know if you knew but after my grandfather passed away my dad was trying to sell a piece of property that was left to him. Louis bought it from my dad. My dad said he had never met anybody so nice and respectful. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. We have some fond memories and I know you all have the best. When the time is right, I hope these memories can carry you and give you strength when you need it. We are sending hugs and prayers for comfort and strength now. Much love, Linda and Bill Frank
