Elizabeth Hope “Beth” Shuman was born on November 4, 1968. She lived a full life, sharing her love, winning personality, and unique sense of humor with her family and friends until her death on February 13, 2017 following an illness. Born with spina bifida and paraplegia, Beth endured numerous medical problems that required surgery and physical therapy. Her doctors did not predict a long life, certainly not 48 years. For the first 12 years of her life, Beth was cared for at home. Then, she lived for 25 years at the Gatchell Home in Atlanta where she attended public school, graduating proudly from Margaret Harris Training Center. Beth then rode the Marta Paratransit Bus to The Frazer Adult Center for work. The Gatchell Home was a small facility where she enjoyed the family atmosphere with many outside activities. Later, in December 2010 she moved to The William Breman Jewish Home. Beth loved The Jewish Home; she trusted the staff; she felt safe and secure. She had her own daily routine, which included her favorite activities such as listening to music, playing bingo, watching her soaps, and her all-important evening phone calls to her family. In many ways Beth was the “heart” of her family and she was loved by her many friends. She will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by her parents, Jim and Janet Shuman of Atlanta and Becky and Dan Peace of St. Simons Island; her brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Amy Shuman; nephews, Nate and Jack Shuman of Winston-Salem, NC; her step-brothers, Britt Peace of Roswell, GA, Stuart Pheil (Valentina) of Roswell, GA; and step-sister, Adrienne Quigley (Michael)of Ashburn, VA. Other family members include her aunt, Mary Kent Whitaker (Whit) of Boone, NC; uncles: Mack Bailey (Shirley) of Rock Hill SC, Don Shuman (Betty) of Cumming, GA, and Steve Shuman (Pat), of Callaway Gardens, GA; and numerous cousins. Her family is grateful to the Jewish Home staff, as well as the Hospice workers who took such good care of Beth. Donations in Beth’s memory to The William Breman Jewish Home or Weinstein Hospice, 3150 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 would be welcome. A memorial service is being planned.
